Uh-oh! Pattern accumulation

I finally did it!  I ordered patterns from Club BMV.  I've been avoiding this for a long time, but I finally succumbed.
I've done my part over the years in over-accumulation of  patterns, and I was trying very hard to use what I already have.  There are still quite a few patterns in those drawers that have never been used.  A shame, really.  Every time I would see someone using a new-to-me pattern, I would convince myself that I already have something similar.  No need to buy.  I did wait for the pattern sales at Fabricland to purchase the few new patterns that I really wanted.  No more pattern sales at Fabricland, at least not like there used to be.  Just recently I was pondering over the catalogues when I went in for thread.  Came home without patterns.  Decided to browse the Vogue patterns on-line, and what do they have - a 75% off sale!  OK - I'm just browsing.  I don't really need anything at the moment.  But, but, but...  So if I make up new rules about pattern accumulation...  1. I must have fabric on hand, or in mind for the pattern.  2. I must actually use these patterns, before I purchase more patterns.  Well, you guessed the rest of the story - out came the magic plastic card, and I clicked my way to four new patterns.
Perhaps you might be wanting to see what I ordered - whether you do or don't - here they are.

I saw this sweater on someone's blog (sorry! can't remember who's) and I was in love.

I've been dreaming of the skirt with the flared back hem.
So there you have it.  Now let's see if I manage to stick to my rules, or ... I just might become a pattern-buying maniac.
Question - do you buy patterns with a definite project in mind?  Or - do you just like to buy whatever strikes your fancy with no particular reason?  Just curious about how others approach pattern buying.

  1. Love all these patterns - can't wait to see what you whip up with them in the New Year. I usually pick up patterns with interesting details that intrigue me, or on a whim...not very practical at all...J...

  3. First, Merry Christmas, dear Irene ... no wonder ... in Spain, Christmas ends on January 6, so I'm still in the Christmas ...
Secondly .. I tend to think that if I keep my money by avoiding buying a pattern .. that money will buy more fabric .. what is truly my addiction ... your patterns are wonderful and I look forward to seeing yours this project, especially the skirt with the spectacular back!

  4. The thin edge of the wedge!!! I am afraid I pick up patterns on a whim, although I manage to make up about 75% of them eventually :) I have a terrible weakness for Vogue designer patterns, particularly Issey Miyake

  5. Patterns are pure possibility--I love acquiring them too! Vogue 8699 is a great pattern. I think I've made it six or seven times. Enjoy!

  7. I've been buying whatever strikes my fancy, but I need to stop that. I have waaay to many patterns that I will never use. I am beginning to realise that there will always be new patterns coming along and pattern sales to go with them!

  10. Hello Irene; when I am making the shirts as gifts for the men in my family; I don't see it as "cranking out more or less the same thing" but I put a lot of thought into selecting the perfect fabric, the buttons and thread to make it just right for just that person, and their personality; as well I go to a real and considerable effort to give each shirt its own individual features and make each one a unique thing quite different from the others.
    Have a lovely weekend :)

  11. Living in Australia buying from BVM represents very good value even with the $25 postage. But it means I buy 7 patterns at a time. This leads to excess! I need a Sydney pattern buying buddy.

  12. We all need new patterns from time to time! Unused patterns aren't a waste - they're just unused.
Can't wait to see what you make and wish you a Happy New Year!

  13. Every pattern I purchase has a purpose...something I want to sew now. Of course that doesn't happen! *LOL* You showed considerable restraint, though!
